How Vanguard Properties Built a Real Estate Brand That Lasts 40 Years — by Knowing Exactly When to Change It

Vanguard Properties has been in the Bay Area for four decades. This year, the company celebrates its 40th anniversary operating 20 offices throughout the region, with satellite locations in Palm Springs and its first out-of-state office in Miami. With 440 active agents across those markets, CMO Chelsea Hock leads a marketing team of 9 responsible for everything the brand touches: company identity, agent branding, listing marketing, advertising, and the oversight that keeps it all moving in the same direction.
The brand's longevity has not come from standing still. In 2019, when the rest of the real estate industry was moving toward bright, clean, white palettes, Chelsea's team went dark — a rich, moody navy that became immediately distinctive in the Bay Area market. The pivot was deliberate, and it set the visual direction that defines the brand today. "We've always kind of pushed ourselves to be on the forefront," Chelsea said. "And it was about 2019 that we said, let's do something unexpected."

Maintain the visual and cultural coherence of a 40-year independent brokerage across 20 offices, 440 agents, and a brand that needed to feel current without losing what made it recognizable. Solve agent consistency without removing the individual expression that makes agents effective in their markets — and do it with a marketing team of 9.
Chelsea Hock's team built a tiered system. Agents who want hands-on custom work come directly to the marketing team. Agents who want to self-serve go into MAXA and build within the established brand framework. For ongoing social and listing content, automated workflows drop brand-compliant pieces directly into agent accounts — removing the friction between an agent and compliant brand materials entirely. Custom agent brands were built inside the platform: individual identities that still connect back to the Vanguard parent brand. When the right option is also the easiest option, agents use it.
"Because those pieces are dropped into their accounts automatically, there is zero need to sneak off to one of the unmentionable platforms where they might not have the right branding. Consistency is more achievable because of that automation. It's already there for them."

The 2025 Exhibit Awards West Coast Under 1,000 Agents recognition was external confirmation of something Chelsea's team already knew about their work. A tenured marketing team — most with more than five years at Vanguard — has built something genuinely distinctive in one of the most competitive real estate markets in the country. "Design has always been a huge focus for our company. Being able to put that out there on a broader stage feels exceptional."
